mm Tasting: Caroline & Ed’s birthday (The right supermarket red) – 20.09.14

UntitledHaving been unable to celebrate their birthdays properly in the summer, Caroline and Ed wanted a slightly different, fun, useful but still intimate joint party with just a few friends and a bit of wine; “maybe something focused on red, and nothing tooooooooooo pricey”. And so, Picking the right supermarket red for you was born…

After quick glass of bubbles and handful of smoked salmon blinis it wasn’t long before we sat down to look at some top tips and techniques to use in picking the right supermarket red for you. I focused on my 6 key points to bear in mind, illustrating each with an actual supermarket red and paired with a particular canapé. They were: Communication – know what you like and think about why; Value – Value is all about paying the right price for a wine; Countries, grapes & styles – Basic knowledge helps you know what to expect; Experiment – There are too many wines in this world not to; Food and Wine – Matching their flavour intensity is tantamount; Pick positively – Try pro-active buying rather then re-active buying. And as we carefully went thought it all, drinking, eating, writing and talking, and in between being told (for the first time ever) how New Zealand wine smelt like fish eggs, how the cheapest wine I’d chosen was also the best and how well my honey & caper sausages went with the South African blend, I’m pretty sure some of it stuck.

Thank you to Caroline and Ed (and everyone else). I have it on good authority that the evening continued in a similar fashion – just with less food and more wine.
