DO Catalunya, as the biggest and youngest Catalan DOs, has innovation, quality and value at its heart. It was created to attribute 200 DO-less Catalan wineries to a governing body and permit cross-blending across different regions. Spanning a vast 42,985 hectares of vineyards and covering 426 municipalities it has a huge diversity of soils, microclimates and orographic variations. The very first Bodegas appeared in the 19th Century. They were large cooperatives known as Wine Cathedrals and included La Espluga de Francolí, a member of Castell d’Or. The Castell d’Or group was founded in 2005 and consists of nine different co-operative facilities covering seven of the twelve Catalan DOs. Their aim is to bring the 9 individual wineries, and the many co-operative members that make them up, the help and support they need to ensure they have access to quality modern wine making and advice. With a staff of 28, Castell d’Or controls a total of 2,800 hectares (6,919 acres) across every single vineyard. They have a team of winemakers at three facilities all with state of the art technology where the team of four or five, led by head winemaker Joan Rabada, work on the coupage and advise on things like treatments and harvests.
