DO Valencia, perhaps less well known and revered than its next door neighbour with a bit of altitude D.O. Utiel-Requena, has its vines lower down on the plains between the mountains and the city. Made predominantly to the west of the city its reds, mostly from Monastrell, Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, tend to be lighter but powerful, ruby red and intense. Whites lean towards the fruitier style using the likes of local grapes Merseguera and Verdil, as well as Macabeo, Chardonnay and Moscatel. Given the heat and aggressive climate the aging requisites for the wines are less than anywhere else so, for example, a Crianza wine will only require 3 months oak aging.

Bodegas los Pinos owns 60 hectares of vineyards in Fontanares, in the Alhorines valley, 700 meters above sea level and about 100km south of Valencia. The winery, which dates back to the 17th century, mainly works with young (up to 25 year old) Monastrell, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat and Viognier vines. Having gained their organic certification in the early 90’s (the first winery in Valencia to do so) they went through a long period of renovation and modernization. In 2007 the new owners starting to experiment in making wines using local grapes and using zero added sulphur. 

Tasting note: Sweet Monastrell; blackcurrant Jam and spice on the nose. Touch of heat; cooked strawberries; watermelon. The palate have very dry; deep black fruits; well established firm tannins; vanilla and great depth. Very old world in style. Dry finish.
Winemaking Detail: Hand harvested. Bunches are destemmed and each variety us vinified separately at 22 Cº inside old concrete tanks, typical of the region with frequent pumping over. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 4 months inside 225-litre used French oak barrels at a controlled temperature.
