DO Rueda is found about 180 km North West of Madrid in the heart of Castille and Leon. On an elevated plain of around 700m above sea level it has a strong continental climate enduring extreme heat and cold. To the north it touches the Duero River (with alluvial soils with high lime content) and to the south the soil is sandy with a gravel and clay subsoil. Because of this there is a good number or 100+ year old pre phylloxera vines knocking about. For all intents and purposes it is known for one thing, Verdejo, which is a grape that everyone loves officially. Whilst sometimes blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Viura they are generally fresh, fruit forward wines with intense citrus and melon and great acidity, often of exceptionally high quality.

Bodegas Menade may have been founded as recently as 2005, but Alejandra, Marco and Richard are the 6th generation of the Rueda based Sanz wine family. Whilst their father continues to run the world renowned Bodegas Vinos Sanz, his three children decided to take another route. In looking right back to their traditional winemaking roots and in fully respecting nature allowing it to speak for itself, Menade was born. Using a mix of natural traditional winemaking and state of the art technology they are able to bring the wines of the past, into the future. And with it various biodiversity projects; an Insect Hotel (increasing insects amongst the vines by 30%), Mobile Trees (different species wheeled into vineyards to see the effects on crops) and an adjoining farm to encourage biodiversity and plant cover.

Tasting note: Lightly golden; clean and crystalline. The nose is fresh and mineral with notes of wet earth; ripe apple and quince as well as sweeter notes of custard; crème pâtissière and baked apples. At first the palate is big; rich with a thin oily texture but is surprisingly fresh and delicate. Salted caramel follow through with balanced sweetness and salinity finishing on notes of buttercup; apple peel and fresh hay.
Winemaking Detail: Hand harvested. Spontaneous fermentation on the basis of naturally occurring wild yeasts and subsequent malolactic incorporating its natural bacteria. No sulphur is added at any stage. Controlled oxidative ageing in used oak barriques and vats for 36 months; then left to settle and fine tune in bottle for 6 months prior to release.
