Story

Sindicat de la Figuera is a small, historic co-operative located in the village of La Figuera, high in the Montsant mountains of Catalonia. Founded in 1932, the co-op experienced decline but was revitalised by a dedicated group of local growers committed to preserving their unique landscape and century-old vines. Some vineyards are planted at over 550 metres above sea level, among the highest in the region, contributing to the wines’ distinct freshness and minerality. The co-operative focuses exclusively on Garnatxa, cultivated on red clay and limestone soils. The altitude, combined with the harsh mountain climate, yields wines that are intensely fruit-driven yet balanced with natural acidity and mineral complexity. Low intervention in nature with organic farming; this approach reflects the original vision of celebrated winemaker René Barbier (Clos Mogador), who played a pivotal role in inspiring the revival of the Montsant region and the co-operative itself. Winemaking Detail: The grapes come from one of Montsant’s coolest areas, from old vineyards of Garnatxa (Garnacha) vines aged between 30 and 100 years old. All hand-harvested. Organic viticulture. A short maceration to preserve freshness before 8-10 months in underground concrete tanks.

Tasting Notes

Cherries, wild berries and vibrant, violet fruit coming out. Tastes a few years older than it is as it's so soft and smooth from extended concrete ageing. It's juicy with very light tannins, but complex with some wild herbs, cedar & leather.

Food Pairing

Jamon; Charcuterie, Pizza, Roast chicken, Roast tomato

About the region

Montsant is a rising star of Catalonian wine, encircling the prestigious Priorat region. Gaining DO status in 2001, it’s known for rugged terrain, old vines, and expressive wines. Vineyards often sit at high elevations—some over 550 metres above sea level—on varied soils including clay, limestone, and occasional slate, contributing to the freshness and minerality found in many wines. The focus is largely on Garnatxa and Carinyena, varieties that thrive in the region’s harsh, dry mountain climate. Farming is often organic, with many small producers embracing minimal intervention to express the land's character.
