Story

Finca Viladellops is a historic estate in Penedès dating back to 1877, owned by the Desvalls family, whose connection to the Garraf Massif stretches back centuries. The modern winery was revitalised in 1999 by Marcelo Desvalls, with guidance from renowned winemaker Josep Lluís Pérez, with a clear vision: to express the Mediterranean identity of the region through indigenous varieties and thoughtful, low-intervention viticulture. The estate extends across around 60 hectares under vine, all certified organic since 2006. Set between the mountains and the sea, the vineyards sit on poor limestone and clay soils rich in marine fossils, naturally limiting yields and contributing to the wines’ hallmark saline, mineral edge. Proximity to the Mediterranean brings cooling breezes and moderates the climate, allowing for slower, more balanced ripening while preserving freshness and aromatic clarity.

Winemaking

Hand-harvested Xarel·lo in small 15kg crates, with vineyard selection and sorting on arrival. Grapes are chilled (5–8°C) and undergo a short pre-fermentative maceration in the press to enhance aromatic extraction. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at a controlled 16°C, preserving freshness and varietal precision. The wine is aged in tank on fine lees until bottling, building subtle texture and mouthfeel while maintaining clarity and lift. No oak is used.

Tasting Notes

Subtle pear and white fruit with aniseed and fine lees creaminess. Full-bodied yet precise, showing citrus tension, soft texture and a saline, mineral edge. Fresh acidity carries a long, elegant Mediterranean finish.

Food Pairing

Grilled white fish with lemon and olive oil, fresh shellfish such as oysters or prawns, and Mediterranean salads with fennel, citrus and herbs.

About the region

Penedes, the coastal region at the heart of Catalunya about 40km south of Barcelona, is perhaps best known for its huge contribution to Cava production. Here white grapes predominate - particularly Xarel-lo and Macabeo, as well as the more fragrant international varieties - grown on well drained soils in both continental and maritime climates. Though typically mild, warm and Mediterranean within lies three separate zones, split according to altitude, distance from the sea and soil type; from the coastal Baix Penedes through Penedes Central to the Alt Penedes. Xarel-lo here is like nothing else offering the perfect balance of smooth, silky, medium bodied wines, fruity and aromatic with fresh acidity and alcohol.
