DO Jumilla, in the heart of Murcia and deep into southern Spain, managed to avoid the phylloxera plague in the 19th century where it became an important Spanish and international wine region. It is the home of the Monastrell (Mourvèdre) variety and as the land transitions from the Mediterranean coast to the central Spanish plains, it's ripens easily, giving punchy powerful black fruit, big tannins and high alcohol. The climate is most definitely continental with very little rainfall through the year though is tempered somewhat by the Mediterranean and altitude further inland. 30 years ago much of the land under vines was uprooted and replanted to make way for a international varieties which grow well and are often used in blends. It follows the same standardised labelling rules as in Rioja.

Casa de la Ermita is a French “château” style house in the heart of baking hot Jumilla. With its vineyards situated at some 700 meters above sea level, the winery and its vines are found inside the “El Carche” National Park - a protected area of beauty. Founded in 1997 with their first vintage released in 1999 the winery strictly follows their philosophy to craft wine in the most natural way possible, respecting both the environment and their ancient Jumilla tradition of wine making. This winery was the first winery in Jumilla to produce organic wines.

Tasting note: Soft; sweet; cooked tomato on the nose backed by dark plum; damson; black cherry and smoke. The palate is super soft; juicy; but full of smoky dark black fruit; some floral; violet notes and a lovely aromatic spice. The tannins are silky and it finished with hints of leather; eucalyptus and some great heat.
Winemaking Detail: Combined manual & mechanical night harvest depending on grape varieties and altitudes. Whole bunch pressed. Fermentation in SST with 9 months ageing in French and American oak.
