Calatayud, in the south west quadrant of the Aragon region is equidistant from the Med, Pyrenees and the Atlantic and consequently has an extreme continental climate with scorching summers and frosty winters. The heat in the vineyards, which sit on a succession of rolling hills of considerable altitude (up to 1000m), is mitigated somewhat by the altitude puts them at great risk of frost in the winter months. It is a barren land, with loose, rocky soils, good drainage and a generous proportion of limestone. Yields are typically low, bringing richness and power to the wines in which Garnacha dominates. For a long time it has been a region synonymous for making bulk wines (being one of Aragon's largest wine-producing regions), but there are a now a growing number of artisan producers using the extreme climate, old vines and power of the Grenache to make wines of real quality.

Colás Viticultores is a small artisan winery situated in the tiny village of Alhama de Aragón in the south-western corner of Aragón. The winery was founded as recently as 2010 by brothers César and Mario Colás, though they are actually the 5th generation of Colás wine growers. Having grown grapes for the local cooperative for over a hundred years they decided to go it alone and make their one and only wine: Roque Colás, a tribute to their great-great-grandfather the original Colas responsible for buying the land. The 14ha of vineyards, in which Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and (to a lesser extent) Merlot predominate, are located in a unique 800m high spot with dry, fresh winds and deep and varied soils. They continue to work organically, fermenting on wild yeasts with no filtration and gentle fining.

Tasting note: Rich, beefy and animal on the nose, slightly unyiedling at first, with cooked fruit and tomatoes. Savoury up front, juicy but dry with rubbery tannins with notes of dark, wooded spice. The finish is fat, super dry and the tannins are youthful and elastic. Long, flavourful and dense. Powerful, dry and with good alcohol but all finely balanced together.
Winemaking Detail: Certified organic farming. Grapes are hand-harvested then ferment spontaneously on wild native yeasts. Each variety and each soil type is fermented separately in small 3000 kg deposits for 15-20 days; initially at 15-16º C increasing progressively to a max of 32º C. Gentle daily stirring; before being lightly pressed with a 100 year old manual press. Aged for 8 months in second and third use French oak barrels.
