Costa Toscana IGT is effectively a coastal sub-division of the Toscana IGT appellation. It was introduced in 2010 to allow producers in Tuscany's coastal areas to differentiate their wines from those made further inland. The climatic differences between Tuscany's coastal areas and inland areas are noticeable, and are reflected in the local wine styles. The official Costa Toscana viticultural area covers land in each of Tuscany's the five coastal provinces: Massa Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto. Unsurprisingly, a Maritime climate contributes mild winters and warm, dry summers thanks to the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea. A varied topography throughout the region creates a wide range of soil types with vineyards found predominately on terra rossa, a reddish clayey to silty soil type, typical of the Mediterranean region.

Sisters Paola and Donatella Palazzi, founded the company in 1973 and began to build a reality that soon became a reference point for some of the wines and organic viticulture. Due to a lack of generational turnover, they reluctantly decided to sell the winery in 2017. In 2017, Marina and Ivanhoe Romin, starting with the search for a sweet home in the country that was close to their relatives and had a vineyard that was “the size of a family often on the road,” met the “Sisters” and were fascinated by their foresight and life’s work. Within 18 months, the two families complete the handover aimed at ensuring continuity in the quality of certain products, including Vin Santo, and in 2019, the historic winery restarted with a new impetus. The estate has only indigenous grape varieties (including some very rare ones), has been organically farmed for almost 50 years, vinifies everything in concrete tanks, and produces a Vin Santo del Chianti that is out of the ordinary. The property, with its total 24 hectares (9 hectares of vineyards, 8 of olive groves) requires considerable effort to revive so for Marina it has become a full-time job and a new life mission.

Tasting note: The nose gives the impression of youth. Purple, violet, floral aromas coming through. The fruit is mostly cherry and strawberry on the nose, with a touch of red apple and macerated strawberry on the palate. A fresh white pepper flavour coming through which is interesting. For a Tuscan wine it's easy going but will age well over the next 5 years.
Winemaking Detail: Manual harvest and hand selection. Vines are pruned days before harvest to leave on the highest qality grapes. Temperature controlled fermentation and vinification takes place in cement tanks built in 1960 that are recoated every 4-5 years.
