Burgundy is a long and complex strip of regions, sub-regions, villages and vineyards stretching from Dijon in the north to Macon in the south. It producers, along with perhaps one or two other regions, the most sought after wines in the word sometimes selling for tens of thousands of pounds. But for a few exceptions the reds are Pinot Noir and the whites are Chardonnay, but it is the micro-climate, soils and winemaking that makes the wine so interesting, unique and varied in style and quality. It is the most terroir driven region of France and with its continental climate that varies much from year to year, vintage variation in the wines is everything.

On our travels to Beaujolais and Burgundy in July 2023, we came across Lionel Margotin and his small winery in Macon. A family run business, Lionel used to sell his fruit to local co-ops, but in 2019 decided to use some of his extra fruit to start making his own wine, and Domaine des Roches Novae was born. He started off with Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay and Aligote, but planted a 0.15ha plot of Sauvignac in the second year, as well as a small planting of some pretty rare Macon Syrah. His top wine, La Belouze, comes from 100 year old vines of Chardonnay, planted on rich, red clay, south-west facing soils.

Tasting note: Crisp citrus and green pear with mouthwatering acidity to boot. It has a baked lemon note to it with that Chardonnay ripeness.
Winemaking Detail: The grapes are harvested by hand and then carefully selected in the cellar. Spontaneous fermentation with wild indigenous yeasts. End of fermentation in stainless steel vats and bottling one year after harvest.
